Finishing is everything that happens to the garment after dyeing and sewing — the wash treatments, chemical processes, and mechanical steps that determine how the fabric feels in the hand, how it behaves in the wash, and how it looks after extended use. This is the invisible quality layer that most buyers never see on a spec sheet, but premium buyers in Germany, the UK, and Australia feel the moment they pick up a garment. Compacting — The Most Important Step

Of all the finishing steps in the production of a polo shirt, compacting has the single greatest impact on how the garment performs after purchase. It is also the step most commonly omitted by low-cost manufacturers who are optimising for price per piece rather than end-use performance.

What Compacting Does

Knit fabric — including the piqué and interlock constructions used for polo shirts — has a loop structure that is inherently extensible. During the dyeing, finishing, and cutting process, the fabric is held under tension, which stretches the loops. If that tension is not mechanically released before the garment is sewn and shipped, the loops will release when the garment is washed — causing the fabric to shrink to its natural relaxed state.

Compacting addresses this by feeding the fabric through heated rollers under controlled steam and mechanical compression. This physically forces the knit loops to contract to their relaxed state before the fabric is cut. The process is called compacting because it literally compacts the loop structure.

Shrinkage: The Numbers

  • Without compacting: 220 GSM piqué polo shirt — 8–12% shrinkage after the first standard wash cycle. A size M garment (chest 102 cm, length 72 cm) becomes effectively a size S (chest 91–94 cm, length 64–66 cm). This is a full size shift — unacceptable for corporate uniform programmes.
  • With compacting: shrinkage is held to 3–5% across warp and weft — within the tolerance specified by AATCC 135 (USA) and ISO 6330 (EU/international) dimensional stability standards. A size M garment remains wearable as a size M after repeated washing.
  • AATCC 135 / ISO 6330 compliance: required by German, UK, and Australian importers as a baseline specification. Compacted fabric passes standard wash test protocols; uncompacted fabric from the same production run typically fails.

Why Embroidery Stability Depends on Compacting

Corporate polo shirts with embroidered logos — left chest, back, sleeve — face an additional problem when produced on uncompacted base fabric. The embroidery backing and stitching is dimensional — it holds the stitch pattern in a fixed position relative to the fabric loops it is anchored to. When the base fabric shrinks after washing, the embroidery does not shrink with it at the same rate. The result is puckering: the embroidered panel distorts, creating a raised or wrinkled area around the logo that looks unprofessional and cannot be reversed.

Compacted base fabric eliminates this problem. Because the fabric has already released its tension, there is no further contraction after washing — and the embroidery remains flat, precise, and correctly positioned through repeated wash cycles.

Dimensional Stability Testing — AATCC 135 & ISO 6330

Dimensional stability is the technical term for how much a garment changes in size when washed. It is measured by comparing the garment dimensions before and after a specified number of wash cycles at a specified temperature. The two main international standards are:

  • AATCC 135 — American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists standard. Used by US buyers, and commonly referenced by Australian and South African importers. Tests at multiple wash temperatures (usually 40°C for care label compliance). Acceptable shrinkage: typically ±3% in both warp and weft directions.
  • ISO 6330 — International Organisation for Standardisation standard used across the EU and internationally. German, UK, and EU retail buyers reference this standard. Tests run at temperatures matching the garment's care label (40°C typical for polo shirts). Acceptable shrinkage: same ±3% tolerance for most corporate and retail applications.

How to Read a Wash Test Report

A dimensional stability report will show measurements in two directions: warp (lengthwise) and weft (widthwise), expressed as a percentage change. A result of -2.5% in the warp means the garment shrunk 2.5% in length — within tolerance. A result of -9% means the garment shrunk 9% — well outside tolerance, and a sign that the fabric was not compacted.
