What Bio Wash Does
Bio wash — also called enzyme wash — is a wet processing treatment using cellulase enzymes. Cellulases are biological agents (derived from fungi or bacteria) that specifically target and degrade cellulose fibres. On a cotton knit polo shirt, this means the enzymes attack the loose, protruding fibre ends on the fabric surface — the short fibres that stand up from the knit structure and cause pilling over time.
The process runs in a temperature-controlled bath, typically at 45–55°C for 45 to 60 minutes, at a controlled pH. The enzymes digest the surface fibres without significantly affecting the main yarn structure — leaving the knit intact but with a cleaner, tighter surface.
Why it works particularly well on piqué: Piqué's honeycomb texture has raised and recessed areas. Untreated piqué accumulates loose fibres in the recesses of the honeycomb — over time, these fibres pill and flatten the texture, making the polo look worn and dull. Bio wash cleans these fibres out of the honeycomb structure, leaving the texture sharper, cleaner, and more defined. The hand feel improvement is immediate and noticeable — softer without being slippery.
What Silicon Wash Does
Silicon wash uses an amino-functional or macro-silicone emulsion applied in a bath after garment construction and initial washing. The silicone molecules bond to the fibre surface, coating each yarn with a thin lubricating layer. This is a chemical surface treatment — it does not change the fabric structure or remove fibres; it adds a coating.
The result is a fundamentally different hand feel compared to an untreated or bio-washed garment. Silicon-washed fabric has a silky, smooth drape — the garment moves fluidly on the body and slides rather than gripping. On piqué fabric, the silicone fills the honeycomb recesses slightly, reducing the tactile texture and giving a more refined, luxury surface.
The drape vs structure trade-off: Silicon wash shifts the garment from structured to fluid. Piqué cotton has natural body and stands slightly away from the torso — this structure is part of its professional look. Silicon wash softens this property. For a hotel executive uniform or a retail private label collection, this is desirable. For a construction workwear polo that needs to hold its shape on site, it is not.

A Note on Compacting — Always Accompany Either Wash
Bio wash and silicon wash improve the feel and surface quality of a polo shirt. But neither treatment addresses shrinkage. A bio-washed or silicon-washed polo made from uncompacted fabric will still shrink 8–12% after the first wash — meaning all the investment in premium finishing produces a garment that no longer fits correctly after first use.
Compacting must accompany any premium finishing treatment. It is the mechanical pre-shrink step that locks the knit loop structure so that washing does not cause dimensional change beyond AATCC 135 / ISO 6330 tolerance.
